Your Path to Active Engagement
Wherever You Are, There You Are
All therapy trends towards mindfulness! This is a self quote from one of my grad school essays, and the more therapy and mindfulness that I do the stronger I believe this statement. I think that there are approaches that are more efficient at that approach than others and I hope to one day formulate and validate an approach to therapy that can streamline that focus. Currently mindfulness is merely an adjunct to therapy, but I think it can within the right framework become the focal point. This is where therapy is and this is a wonderful place for therapy to be. If you are here and considering working with me either as a therapist or a mindfulness coach then you are in a wonderful place. Wherever you are in your journey, there is where you are and the best place to start is exactly where you are.
Don’t Just Do Something! Sit there!
Traditionally the understanding of western psychology and mindfulness indicates that they are generally incompatible due to psychology being focused with “doing” while mindfulness is focused on “being”. These are very valid critiques. However, mindfulness isn’t just stopping and never moving again. It’s pausing. Mindfulness is always mindfulness of something, and when mindful of something the beauty of the whole fresco is revealed to us. When we see the entire picture then we are able to exercise mindfulness of action or “doing”. It is this lens that guides my integration of mindfulness into therapy, and my goal in mindfulness coaching. First we don’t just do something, and just sit there, once we have sat there and seen clearly, then we can mindfully do something. It's all about not just doing but intentionally doing.
